ICE
– In
Case
of Emergency, is an emergency awareness concept to
help save you and your
loved ones. By
simply placing ICE in
front of a loved ones name you identify them as an emergency contact. You are giving emergency
responders critical
information.
In an emergency, every second counts. Emergency responders need
information
fast. They
are faced with on the
spot decisions. When
every second
counts, emergency personnel need answers fast so they can quickly and
effectively give you or your loved ones the medical attention they so
desperately need. Give them a tool to help you. It’s easy, free,
and could save your life!
The original concept, conceived by Cambridge
paramedic Bob Brotchie. “There
were many times when I was unable to
communicate with someone because of trauma or any kind of medical
condition.” “It
seems natural this information should be
kept there (your cell phone).”
“It's the
consistency that makes this effective.”
Eight of 10 people carry a cell phone,
but only two of 10
people carry a medical information card.
Be prepared!
Cell Phone
Hints
Think carefully about who will be your ICE partner. Make sure your ICE partner:
- Has agreed to be your ICE
partner
- Has a list of people they
should contact on your behalf, including your work number.
- Knows about your medical
conditions that could affect your emergency treatment.
- Knows that if you are under
18, that they are authorized to make medical decisions affecting treatment
on your behalf.
- If your partner is deaf,
display their name as ICETEXT.
Number Hints
- Most new cell phones sort
contacts alphabetically. Rank your
ICE contacts as 1 ICE, 2 ICE, 3 ICE …
They will display first for emergency responders saving response
time.
- Because your ICE contact is a
duplicate of a current contact, place an * after the phone number to let
the proper caller ID display.
- Make sure your number is not
PIN protected.
And keep your cell phone charged!
